The documentation states that to build the distribution, one needs to run make otelcontribcol.
This works, but results in a massive 546M binary on x86_64.
How can one build only the needed components, e.g. processor/attributesprocessor ?

The contrib distribution is published from the opentelemetry-collector-releases repo, so it does not live in this repo's releases. The supported channels:

• Binaries and OS packages (.deb / .rpm / .apk / .tar.gz) from the releases of open-telemetry/opentelemetry-collector-releases. Look for assets named otelcol-contrib_<version>_<os>_<arch>.
• APT / YUM repos at https://packages.opentelemetry.io. The otelcol-contrib package installs a systemd unit that reads /etc/otelcol-contrib/config.yaml.
• Container image: otel/opentelemetry-collector-contrib (Docker Hub) or the ghcr.io mirror under opentelemetry-collector-releases.

One caveat worth knowing up front: contrib bundles every component, which is a large surface to patch and reason about in production. If you only need a handful of components, the recommended path is to build a trimmed distribution with the OpenTelemetry Collector Builder (ocb), listing just what you use. Contrib is great for trying things out; ocb is what you usually want once the config settles.
