Screenshots are outdated - provide and document a way to update application screenshots

The screenshots in the Software-Manager are sometimes outdated, by quite a margin.

Example: sqlitebrowser
The screenshot of sqlitebrowser, that is shown in the Software-Manager, must be several years old and is quite different from the current look of the application.

I searched for ways on how-to provide/ upload a current screenshot for applications.

• Google could not provide a link to documentation on how-to upload update screenshots for linuxmint.
• I could not find a way to upload screenshots on the comunit.linuxmint.org site - where I wrote some reviews, in the past.

I am sure the community is willing to upload/update application screenshots. Currently, there doesn't seem to be an obvious way how to contribute screenshots for the Software Manager.

As discussed in that thread, we could not figure out:

1. How to add new screenshots
2. How to remove outdated ones
3. Where existing screenshots came from
4. The code or infrastructure behind this whole website

Hi! This is a great point about screenshot maintenance.

I maintain heroshot, a screenshot automation tool that could help with this. It captures screenshots based on a config file, making it easy for anyone to regenerate them when apps update their UI.

If the team is interested, I could help set up a workflow for capturing and updating these application screenshots. Would that be useful?

It looks like they are attempting to to add secondary images from https://screenshots.debian.net using web-scraping, however, that flow is broken, 0 additional screenshots are added for any package.

I think fixing that would be a very uncontroversial first step for this (just fixing a broken flow that was already intended) so I have opened a pull request for that:

However, that will only affect the 2nd, 3rd, 4th screenshots...

From there I think it would be better to make https://screenshots.debian.net the default source of the 1st screenshot as well because

• anyone can easily contribute there unlike https://community.linuxmint.com/img/screenshots/
• it seems it is kept more up to date than https://community.linuxmint.com/img/screenshots/

Would be very curious what maintainers think about both parts of that proposal!

Oops, looking at the existing pull requests i also see #490 which is very similar. I promise I didn't copy you when I made my pull request @allendema, we just independently came up with similar ideas! I'm going to leave mine (#493) open because #490 is more opinionated, and will let the maintainers decide which direction they want to go if any.
